What you’ll experience
A winter walk through Oslo’s forested hills with panoramic views of the city, the fjord, and the famous Holmenkollen ski jump. We’ll stop at a traditional cabin along the way and finish at Vettakollen – a viewpoint named after the Viking word for fire.
We meet at the tiger statue outside Oslo Central Station and take the metro together to Frognerseteren, 500 metres above sea level. The 40-minute ride offers views of the city as we climb into the forest.
From Frognerseteren, we walk downhill through snow-covered trails, crossing paths with cross-country skiers along the way. After a short uphill section, we reach Fuglemyrhytta – a traditional Norwegian cabin where I’ll tell you about the role of cabin culture in Norwegian life.
From the cabin, we continue through the quiet winter forest to Vettakollen, the highlight of the tour. The name comes from the Old Norse word for “fire” – this was once a signal point where fires were lit to warn of approaching enemies. Today, it offers one of the best views of Oslo: the city centre, the fjord with its islands, and Holmenkollen ski jump in the distance.
After enjoying the view, we walk downhill to Vettakollen station and take the metro back to the city centre.
