What you’ll experience
A forest walk from the hills above Oslo down to one of the city’s best viewpoints. Along the way, we’ll pass a traditional cabin and a forest kindergarten – a good introduction to Norwegian outdoor culture.
We meet at the tiger statue outside Oslo Central Station and take the metro together to Frognerseteren, the highest station on the line at around 450 metres above sea level. The ride takes about 36 minutes, and you’ll watch the city fall away below as we climb into the forest.
From Frognerseteren, we start walking downhill. Early on, we pass a forest kindergarten – one of many in Oslo where children spend their days outdoors year-round. I’ll explain how this fits into Norwegian childhood and the concept of “friluftsliv” (outdoor life). Please don’t photograph the children.
We continue to Fuglemyrhytta, a cabin run by the Norwegian Trekking Association, where we’ll take a short break. From there, we walk deeper into the forest until we reach Vettakollen – the highlight of the tour. From this hilltop, you can see the entire city of Oslo, the fjord stretching south, and on clear days, all the way to the Swedish border.
After taking in the view, we walk down to Vettakollen station and catch the metro back to the city centre.
